When it comes time to look for a dental school to apply to when furthering your education and beginning a career in the dental industry, an important stepping stone of the journey is taking the DAT. You may currently be preparing for the test by studying and taking pre-courses to earn a high score, but it’s also necessary to research how much it costs to ensure you’re prepared financially and can register on time. Here’s what you’ll need to know about the fees involved.
What is the DAT?
The DAT, or the Dental Admission Test, is a timed multiple-choice test that is conducted by the American Dental Association and is used by dental programs and colleges to determine if an applicant can succeed academically after reviewing the score they earned on the exam. Each dental school has requirements on the score that must be earned by the applicant to gain acceptance to the program or college.
The DAT is available to take year-round at Prometric testing centers throughout the U.S. Students are encouraged to register for the DAT several weeks in advance before they desire to take the test.
How Much Does the DAT Cost?
The DAT requires a non-refundable $415 fee, and the fee is also non-transferrable. The fee is used for score reporting to each school listed on the test application and for official score reporting to the individual’s pre-dental advisor. The fee also includes obtaining an unofficial score report, which is issued at the testing center.
Applicants can submit updates to schools they’ve selected on their test exam before the testing date. Any changes made after taking the test will result in a $34 fee for each report that is sent to the recipient or dental school.
Financial assistance is available through the ADA for applicants who are U.S. citizens or resident aliens. Partial waiver fees are available and cover 50 percent of the DAT registration fee. The financial assistance doesn’t cover any additional charges that the test-taker incurs after the initial application. All fee waivers need to be requested in writing for eligibility.
How Do I Apply to Take the DAT?
Those who want to apply to take the DAT can register by accessing the ADA’s website and obtaining a DENTPIN. The DENTPIN is used to submit an electronic application, which is when the $415 registration fee must be paid using a debit or credit card.
